Day 2: Joe Souza - THE REAWAKENING

First, a big thanks to Lacey for this great Halloween invitation and the chance to talk about my novel THE REAWAKENING.

Halloween is a great time for zombies and my novel the THE REAWAKENING, THE LIVING DEAD TRILOGY, Book 1 is all about zombies. Okay, they’re not technically zombies, although they do come back and consume the living. They’re bastards spawned from mutated animals fed a diet of genetically modified organisms. If that sounds confusing, consider what happens next. After an infected person dies, they come back to a life as spiritual angels sent to warn the living that they must change their ways or else—before turning into living dead cannibals. Sounds strange right? Well, it is. It’s why my trilogy is called The Living Dead Trilogy. Not the zombie trilogy, despite the fact that Books 2 and three have full-fledged zombies in them. Depending on whether you’re a zombie purist or not, you may be prone to argue with the legal definition of zombies in my book. But hey, a little zombie controversy isn’t necessarily a bad thing, right?

Now, about their speed. They’re slow as molasses. Does anyone even know what molasses is anymore? Okay, slow as honey but not as sweet and harvested from Zom-bees! Ha! I love zombie puns as much as I like my zombies like Kim Kardashian likes her men: slow and dumb, which is just about perfect for Halloween. The little kids can dress up as zombies and not stray too far from their parents. Let them dress as the zombies from 28 Weeks Later and it might take weeks to find them in the neighborhood again. Slow is also good because you can snatch more of their candy while they’re plodding along.

THE REAWAKENING features one of the most violent and bizarre characters in zombie fiction. Some love her while others can’t stand the sight of her. Her name is Dar and she’s the troubled teen daughter of the narrator of the novel. Depressed and mentally ill, she is one of the most unstable persons you will ever read about. Then the living dead apocalypse occurs and she transforms into a zombie slaying sociopath. She shaves off her hair and spins it into a Mohawk. She carries an ax and takes pleasure in splitting open the zombie’s skulls. In short, Dar would be the perfect costume for any young whippersnapper looking for a great costume for Halloween. You’ll love her, you’ll hate her, but in the end you’ll be glad she’s on your side when the zombie apocalypse breaks.

So if you like THE REAWAKENING then be sure to check out DARPOCALYPSE, THE LIVING DEAD TRILOGY, BOOK 2, which is due out this Fall. Here you’ll see full-fledge zombies, though to be sure they’re still slow as molasses. You can outrun them but you can’t escape the horde. They’ve infiltrated every corner of the earth. DARPOCALYPSE is a fine accompaniment to THE REAWAKENING.
